Eighteen Inches

What comes to your mind when I say “Eighteen Inches”? Puzzled? Well, eighteen inches is about a cubit. So, what is a cubit? It’s actually a unit of measure in ancient times that goes from elbow to the tip of the outstretched longest finger of an average person. Of course, someone would have had to have been selected for the honour, probably the ruler of the land, and his cubit would have been made the cubit that everyone adopted, otherwise it would have been impossible to have had any standardization in measurements of length based on that system.

Now that we are clear as to what a cubit is, why do you think I am writing about “Eighteen Inches”? Well, eighteen inches is also about the distance from the top of our heads to our hearts. It is a truism that “People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care”. We all know this, yet how often have we put our efforts into delivering messages, conducting workshops, delivering talks, webinars, etc., and find that our messages have been messages to the head and not to the heart? Well, personality styles have quite a lot to do with it. So do love languages, etc. However, the two essential factors that must be in our messages are that of sincerity and truthfulness. Sincerity has to do with transparent motives. Truthfulness has to do with taking pains to ensure that whatever we present is actually true, since usually not all of the source material is exclusively from ourselves.

So, next time we deliver, conduct or present talks, workshops or keynote addresses, let’s remember to have sincerity and truthfulness in all that we present. Otherwise, we’ll all miss the point by about eighteen inches. Have a great time communicating vital truth into other people’s lives!
